Project Memory

RADAR is requested to design the expansion in a one-story house with a mansard, located in a typical area in the Las Cruces spa, V region of Valparaíso, Chile.

Said extension would have to be a space without a defined program, which enables a multiplicity of uses. In turn, the principal requests that this operation allow him to have views of the sea, however, this last requirement could not be fulfilled in the same intervention, given the height, so a second operation is proposed in the mansard of the building . The house, although it is located in a typical area, is not in optimal conditions, however, the strict regulation prevents the demolition or even the modification of its facades. 2 predominant architectural typologies are recognized in the place, both from the North American school - stick style and shingle style - which, although they will not be repeated, they will be reinterpreted.

As an intervention to the house, an improvement to the facade and a restructuring of the interior on the first floor are proposed. In turn, it was decided to make the required expansion on the second floor, in order to take the necessary height and thus see the sea. An elongated volume is proposed that intersects with the existing one, subtly governed by the morphologies of the "shingle" and "stick styles" towards the exterior, and favoring the open and illuminated spaces towards the interior. The new volume of 2 water ends in large openings (window to the street, terrace to its backyard), and at the same time, it houses in its upper central section a terrace-viewpoint, from which, due to the height reached, it finds in its sea views.
